Reactive power (Vars) is required to maintain the voltage to deliver active power (Watts) through transmission lines. Motor loads and other loads require Reactive power to convert the flow of electronics into useful work. When there is not enough Reactive power, the voltage sags down and it is not possible to push the power demanded by loads through the lines.

In power system design, you need to be certain that steady state voltages and load currents are within the continuous ratings of the equipment for both normal and emergency operating conditions.
Load flow studies are useful in determining:

power flows and voltages in a power system.

power flows are within equipment ratings.

voltages are within acceptable operating limits.

In addition, the load flow computer program is used to make a voltage regulation study.
